BetMGM customers to have accounts suspended for athlete abuse
Operator revises its terms of service to add sanctions for “harassing or abusive language toward athletes, coaches, or team, or league personnel”
BetMGM has updated its terms of service to include sanctions for customers found to be abusing professional athletes.
Per the update, any customers found to have used “harassing or abusive language toward athletes, coaches, or team, or league personnel” will have their accounts suspended by the MGM Resorts International and Entain JV.
Although the previous terms of service allowed BetMGM to suspend a player’s account for any lawful reason, the company noted that the update “provides even more clarity around the policy and underscores BetMGM’s commitment to sports integrity and player safety.”
The updated terms are subject to regulatory approval as and when required.
A study conducted by the NCAA in October 2024 found that 12% of all abusive messages sent to student-athletes were related to sports betting.
Rhea Loney, BetMGM chief compliance officer, said: “We are unwavering in our commitment to sports integrity – and that commitment extends to safeguarding athletes, coaches, and league personnel.
“Our legal, regulated environment enables us to identify misconduct, investigate reports, and take action when necessary. Any confirmed instance of harassment will result in decisive measures, including account suspension.”
Former Detroit Lions running back and BetMGM ambassador Barry Sanders added: “As a professional athlete, I know how important respect is – both on and off the field.
“BetMGM is sending a strong message that harassment has no place in sports or sports betting. I’m proud to see BetMGM protecting athletes and promoting integrity.”
BetMGM noted that the update aligns with its responsible gaming (RG) initiatives developed with RG platform GameSense.
In December, the operator launched its ‘Mullet Over’ safer gambling ad campaign, featuring National Hockey League stars Terry Ryan and Connor McDavid.
The 30-second commercial promotes BetMGM’s RG tools available to players, such as the ability to set deposit and stake limits.
